Da alcuni minuti, con un annuncio ufficiale apparso sul sito del club, il Manchester City ha comunicato di aver acquisito dal Chelsea le prestazioni sportive del centrocampista croato Mateo Kovačić. Il 29enne, che in passato ha vestito le maglie di Dinamo Zagabria, Inter e Real Madrid, vanta un palmares ricco di trofei, fra cui si annoverano ben 4 Champions League (3 con il Real e 1 con i Blues) e altrettanti Mondiali per club, oltre a 3 Supercoppe europee, 1 Europa League e svariati titoli nazionali. L’ultima stagione vissuta con il Chelsea non è stata di certo esaltante per Kovačić: i londinesi hanno chiuso la Premier League al 12º posto in classifica e sono usciti ai quarti di UCL per mano del Real Madrid (2-0; 0-2), con il classe 1994 che ha realizzato soltanto 2 gol e 2 assist in 37 presenze totali. La formula del trasferimento è quella dell’acquisto diretto, con il City che andrà a versare nelle casse del Chelsea 25 mln £ (poco più di 29 mln €) più 5 di bonus. Il nuovo contratto di Kovačić con i Citizens avrà durata quadriennale: scadrà infatti il 30 giugno 2027.

Queste le parole con cui il Manchester City ha reso ufficiale l’acquisto di Kovačić, che andrà a rimpiazzare il posto lasciato vacante a centrocampo da Gündoğan:
“Manchester City have completed the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea on a four-year deal.
The 29-year-old made 221 appearances in five seasons at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Europa League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, as well as collecting the club’s Player of the Year award in 2019/20.
He has so far won 95 caps for Croatia and was a key part of his country’s squad that reached the 2018 World Cup final and finished third at last year’s tournament in Qatar.
Kovacic said he was thrilled to be joining City where he says he can continue to develop under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola and believes he is joining the finest team in world football”.

Anyone who has watched this team under Pep knows how good they are – for me, they are the best in the world. The trophies they have won are clear for all to see, but they are also the best footballing side out there. To be joining this squad really is a dream for any footballer. I still have plenty of learning and developing to do, and I know under Pep’s management I can become a better player, which is really exciting for me. My plan now is to rest for a few weeks before coming back to Manchester to prepare for the new season. I want to help this club stay at the top and win more trophies”.
